Strickland is most noted for his work with the Ravi Coltrane Quartet and the Marcus Strickland Quartet. His discography includes over 30 albums with various recording artist. He attended New School for Jazz & Contemporary Music in New York City and consistently has a prominent place in the Downbeat Critics poll. His playing has been described as "emitting fields of cumulative energy, clouds of feature-touch and heavy-handed syncopations latent with power like an oncoming storm" (Thomas Conrad, Downbeat Magazine).
